Stefan: I'm more spiritual than religious, so I don't have a set of beliefs about how others behave, as long as it doesn't hurt other people. It’s the humanist in me. I care more about people being happy, than I do about “rules” that attempt to define and restrict adult relationships. And while I respect that you believe it's a lifestyle, I just don't see it that way. Nobody says, "I don't agree with that guy being black". He just is, because that's how he was born. I think people are born gay or straight and that's just how it is. It’s hard to believe that anyone would choose to be gay in many parts of this country.

I’m glad that you can look past what you don't agree with to accept your friend as a brother. That's a hell of a lot more than most people, but you’re a lot nicer guy than most people too. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs. Being able to recognize and respect the beliefs of others is the most important thing.

Joel: I didn't mention that, but you are absolutely right. Their lives are miserable and sad. I can’t think of a more effective way to bring a story like this to a wide audience. It would be easier to dismiss this movie if it were a slightly updated remake of Serendipity.

Brokeback Mountain does not glorify homosexuality. It isn't giving anything away to say that both men pay a very high price for their affair. They both must lead secret lives which cut them off from their wives and children. They understand how their relationship is hurting them, but are unable to let it go.

You could say that their relationship gives them brief moments of happiness, but not that it makes them happy. It is fascinating to watch, but the story itself is a tragedy -- it's not one that anyone would want to live through themselves

Greg,

I admire that you are open to things - I just can't accept something that I don't believe in. I'll throw out the obligatory "I have a good friend that is gay" because I actually have several. One friend I think of as almost a brother. He and I have had many conversations about his lifestyle. I love the guy but not the lifestyle. As a Christian, I can't accept his choice of lifestyle. I can accept him as a brother though, regardless of his choice.

But, that isn't exactly what your post was about, was it? Or was it? ;)
