Don't get me wrong, he still bungled plenty of stuff in a conservative agenda sort of way, but he was considered a moderate. The Austin American Statesman remarked a few weeks ago that they wished Governor Bush could have a long talk with President Bush. You know, one of the interesting things about Bush is that he was mainstream and centrist in many ways as governor of Texas. Now, he'll fire his crazies and do some good. Too bad it was only a dream.
