It was an intersting time for them, like none we'll know. My grandmother came through it all with festering hatred for Germans (and Republicans). I guess there's probably a lot of people with a story like ours.

Ewwwww to the green nanny feet! The looking through the keyhole reminds me of a very old silent Danish film that I once studied in class.

My grandpa left England sometime in the '40s...I am not sure if it was during or right after World War II. I know his father was killed during the war, because he has a Nazi belt buckle that his father retrieved off of a dead soldier. I am pretty sure that his family moved to Manitoba, but to be honest I don't know if I am confused, because that's where my mom was born. I will give him a call today and find out. I really appreciate you sharing your story of your grandmother. She actually reminds me a little of my grandpa's mom. She came to live with my grandparents the last few years of her life, and while her faculties weren't all there she still had a lot of memories. I remember we were driving somewhere and she and I were in the backseat. She told me this story about her and her little brother peeking through the keyhole on their nanny. She was sneaking a bath in their mother's tub while she was out, and what stood out to her was that the nanny's feet were green and filthy! She supposed it was because she never took a bath otherwise.

Where did your grandfather live in Canada? My grandmother came from England to Canada in the '20s (I think), also on the Queen Mary, I believe, and they settled near Kingston, Ontario. Subsequently, she moved to NYC to go to nursing school, married my grandfather, and moved around the east coast, settling in NC.

Sadly, she just passed away. Interesting that they have such similar stories. Maybe we're related. Here's a bit on my grandmother.
