Spaceballs: the sequel!

Mel Brooks announced this week that he plans to film a sequel to his classic 1987 sci-fi spoof Spaceballs. There is a strong possibility that it will be ready for release shortly before Star Wars: Episode III hits theaters in the Spring of 2005.

I’m sure that everyone has a movie from their childhood that they watched a few hundred times and can quote dialogue from at will. In my house, that movie was Spaceballs. My brother and I must have watched it well past the point that you normally become brain dead, but it never lost its appeal. The truth is, I laugh harder watching it today than ever before.

Spaceballs is a great example of how well a spoof can be done when handled by the right person. Mel Brooks is a comic genius with a perfect understanding of the hilarity that can ensue when oddballs collide.

It’s sad to realize that John Candy, so memorable as the sidekick Barf (Barfolemew), won’t be back for the sequel, as he passed away in 1994. He created many wonderful characters in numerous comedies. I know that the sequel will be missing a lot of heart without him.

Until then, may the schwartz be with you.
