The great wide open

With two hurricanes hitting the Florida coast within weeks of each other, and the regular seasonal threat, I have to wonder why anyone would choose to live there. While I’m sure the coast is beautiful, it’s hard to believe that would outweigh the frequent possibility of losing everything you own, coupled with what must be incredibly high insurance rates.
For that matter, I wonder why anyone chooses to live anywhere. Population? Geography? Is it the number of trees, or the proximity to water?
I live in Austin mostly by default since I grew up a half hour away. I’ve only lived in one other city, and that was for school. As wonderful as Austin is, my long term plans all involve moving away. I don’t have any specific plans, just a general sense that I eventually want to experience something else. The possibilities range from moving North for the real winters, to heading West towards California where Nicole’s parents live. We took a trip through Arizona a few years ago and really enjoyed Flagstaff as well.
It’s difficult to imagine, but I’m sure plenty of people live in the same state their entire lives. There is something scary, yet thrilling about packing up everything you own and moving somewhere completely different than anything you’ve ever known. Or maybe I’ve been watching too much Everwood.
If you’re reading this, take a minute and tell me about where you live and why. Would you consider living somewhere else? What factors might influence your decision?
