I heard William Frist, M.D. speaking at the RNC last night while making a pleasant run for snapple and licorice. I listen to NPR (National Public Radio), and they were broadcasting from Madison Square Garden. My initial reaction was to change the station, but I forced myself to listen. I was curious what the other side had to say. I thought it very interesting how Frist was attempting to portray himself, the compassionate and caring physician, especially with the knowledge of his actions towards defenseless animals. I became especially irritated when he launched into an attack on Kerry over stem cell research. He tried to argue that the Bush administration had not passed any measures limiting federal research. With his medical background the kind physician attempted to explain to us uninformed Americans that proven results existed only from research done on adult stem cells, rather than embryonic stem cells. He threw in a keyword for the republican platform, saying that research must be conducted with "moral" and ethical standards, and that embryos deserve "moral" respect. If you go around limiting scientific progress based on "moral" grounds then it makes it difficult to produce the results that are being seen in adult stem cell research. He suggested that the private sector was free to fund such research. That's fine to say, but it simply is not a reality. The amount of funding that it takes can only be successfully realized at a federal level. At any rate, by the end of Frist's speech I was pretty enraged. I'm quite sure my Red Vines suffered the consequences.
