I watched the video this morning. I’m not even really sure why. I heard several news anchors say that it was gruesome, and I guess that I needed to see for myself. I felt sick afterwards. Like most people in this country, I probably have a casual desensitization towards violence, but watching that man meet a horrible end was one of the most real and terrible things I could ever imagine.
The girlfriend thinks that this was bound to happen after the photos from Abu Ghraib were released. Maybe so. But do these groups really need an excuse to murder the innocent? What statement are they really making? What effect do the accidental deaths we have caused over the past year have on this retaliation?
Why is it so hard to remember a time that we were not fighting terrorists and reading about executions?
